Ep 061: The Caretaker, The Widow and The Big Present

In this Christmas episode of The Web of Queer, we review the Eleventh Doctor Christmas Special The Doctor, The Widow and the Wardrobe.

In this review, we discuss what we thought of Doctor Who’s attempt to do a Narnia-style story. Did we think the adaption was successful? Could we accept the terrible science? What did we think of the Doctor’s attempt to create a perfect Christmas adventure?

Ep 056: A Song of Ice and Claras

In this episode of The Web of Queer, we review the Eleventh Doctor story Cold War, and discuss Clara’s character arc.

In our Cold War review, we discuss how this is an underrepresented part of history in Doctor Who. What did we think of the return of Ice Warriors? How did the Professor’s relationship with Clara compared to the Doctor? How did other roles we’ve seen the actors in influence rewatching the story?

Our Clara discussion takes a look at the character from her start as the Impossible Girl all the way to running off with her own Tardis at the end. Did we think that Clara’s character stayed consistent throughout her time with the Doctor? Did we like the direction her arc(s) took, and the decision to have her on the Tardis part time, while still trying to maintain her day-to-day life?

In this episode of The Web of Queer, we review the Sixth Doctor story Terror of the Vervoids, and the Tenth Doctor and Donna Big Finish story, Death and the Queen.

In our Terror of the Vervoids review, we discuss Mel’s introduction, and how quickly it seems to dismiss Peri. Do we think this story helps or hurts the Doctor’s defence? How well realized is the villain in the story, and how believable are the secondary characters?

In our review of Death and the Queen, we talk about Ten and Donna’s return with Big Finish, and how their characters are written after their departure from TV. How much fan service was in this story, and did it serve its purpose? Who moves the story along, and who didn’t need to be there at all?

Ep 054: Thoughts and Feelings

In this episode of The Web of Queer, we review the Torchwood episode Greeks Bearing Gifts, and discuss experiences outside of one’s own orientations.

(Content warning: The review and discussion include mature themes and isn’t appropriate for younger listeners. If Torchwood isn’t suitable for you, then you should probably skip this week’s podcast.)
In our review of Greeks Bearing Gifts, we talk about Tosh and Mary’s relationship, and how unhealthy it is. Given the original plan for Mary to be a male character, how might the relationship have been perceived differently? We also discuss how Jack's description of a previous friendship is transphobic.

(Content warning: This includes some mention of sexual abuse. To avoid this at 1 hour 14 minutes skip forwards 60 seconds.)
In our discussion, we talk about experiences outside of one’s personal orientations. How these experiences might be perceived, and why they don’t change who a person is. How might a short term or long term relationship include such experiences, and why people may be afraid to discuss them?

In this episode of The Web of Queer, we review the 4th Doctor story The Invasion of Time, and discuss romantic orientations and the split attraction model.

For our review of The Invasion of Time, what did we think of the Time Lords, and how they were portrayed? What did we think of how Leela’s story was handled? Did we like the exploration of the inside of the Tardis?

In our discussion, we talk about the split attraction model, and why separating sexual and romantic attraction is important. We discuss how this applies to asexual and aromantic people, as well as its broader applications for all identities. We also discuss the differences between behaviour and orientation.

Ep 052: Double Maths

In this episode of The Web of Queer, we review the 2nd Doctor story The Enemy of the World, and the Big Finish 1st Doctor story The Cold Equations.

For our review of The Enemy of the World, we discuss the ambiguous politics the Doctor has found himself in, and how he handles an uncertain situation. How does the packed story unfold, how do the characters interact with each other, and how does the story differ, now that all the episodes have been found?

For our review of The Cold Equations, we discuss how they handled this story with only two voices. Did we like the hard science fiction setup of the story? Why were there so few women? How did we think the reveal of Oliver’s secret was handled?

Ep 051: Death in the Rainbow

In this episode of The Web of Queer, we review the 10th Doctor story The Unicorn and the Wasp, and have a discussion about the trope of killing gay, lesbian, and bisexual characters.

For our review of The Unicorn and the Wasp, what did we think of the inclusion of Agatha Christie and the aspects of her novels? Did we think the tone of the story fit with the events taking place? What did we think of how the story handled the inclusion of the gay couple?

In our discussion, we talk about the killing of gay, lesbian and bisexual characters, and why the impact is different from straight ones. How often does this happen in modern TV, what might it roots be, and how writers can work to correct the trope in their own shows?

Ep 050: Lost And Found In Space

In this episode of The Web of Queer, we review the Fourth Doctor story State of Decay and the Big Finish Sixth Doctor story 1963: Space Race.

For our State of Decay review, our new fans have finally met all of the companions, so how was this as an introduction to Adric and Romana II? How did we think the folk tales of vampires differ between our space and E Space?

In our review of 1963: Space Race, we look at one of the stories Big Finish released for Doctor Who's 50th Anniversary. What did we think of this spy story? How well was the science of spaceflight (and black holes) handled? What did we think of the portrayal of the lesbian relationship in this story?

Afterwards, we discuss where we would go if we had a trip in the Tardis. Who wants to visit aliens? Would we rescue missing episodes? Who would become an evil Space Dictator?

Ep 048: You Keep Using That Word: I do not think it means what you think it means

In this episode of The Web of Queer, we review the 5th Doctor story Enlightenment, and then have a discussion on how asexuality is defined in the media and how that conflicts with real life experiences.

For our Enlightenment review, we discuss costumes, continuity, and the Creepy Dude. How did Tegan handle herself under such odd scrutiny, what was Turlough really up to, and how does the Doctor stack up, being an Ephemeral himself?

In our asexuality discussion, we break down the difference between media’s version of asexuality, and the real life use of the word to describe people on the ace spectrum. What results from using perceived asexuality to “other” a character in fiction? And how have other characters in Doctor Who contributed to the perception of the Doctors sexual and romantic orientations?

In our Series 9 overview, we look back at the series as a whole, now that it is complete. Did we like this structure of two-parters? What did we think of the tone of the series? Are we happy with the series arc, now that we've seen it concluded?

In this episode of the Web of Queer, we review the series 9 finale Hell Bent, and draft some fictional characters to fill the vacancy in the Tardis.

In our Hell Bent review, we talk about The Doctor's return to Gallifrey. What do characters like The General mean for the show, and who is voting for a Clara/Me spinoff?

In our fictional character discussion, we decide who we would pick to fill the excellent shoes left by Clara’s departure. What universe are they from, how would they react to the adventure, and how would they get along with the 12th Doctor?
